BESS and Electrical Panels: How to Integrate Battery Storage into Existing Installations

BESS and Electrical Panels: How to Integrate Battery Storage into Existing Installations

When energy solutions change, the infrastructure has to keep up

As more Danish companies invest in green energy solutions such as battery storage (BESS) and solar power, new demands are placed on the existing electrical infrastructure. It is no longer enough simply to install the batteries – the existing supply and distribution panels must be able to handle the new technology.

Recently, one of our skilled panel fitters in Thy, Anders Vestergaard, completed a job that illustrates this challenge perfectly. An existing supply panel was expanded with two new outgoing feeders for a BESS, while a feeder for a solar PV system was relocated. It may sound simple, but getting all the components to work together safely and efficiently takes precise planning, technical insight and experience.

What is a BESS, and why do companies choose it?

BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System – a battery storage system that enables companies to store electricity for later use. That could be surplus power from solar panels during the day, which can then be used in the evening or at night, or electricity purchased at times when prices are low.

For many companies, investing in a BESS is a natural extension of their green energy strategy. But the technical implementation requires more than just setting up batteries – it also requires adapting the existing electrical infrastructure.

Typical challenges when integrating a BESS

When companies need to integrate battery storage into their existing electrical installations, they often face a number of practical challenges:

Capacity and load

The existing panel must be able to handle the increased load from the battery storage system. This may require expansion with new outgoing feeders, upgrades of existing components or, in some cases, an entirely new panel solution.

Space constraints

A BESS often requires room for additional fuses, contactors and monitoring equipment. If the existing panel does not have enough space, it must either be expanded or replaced with a custom-built electrical panel.

Coordination with solar power

Many companies combine BESS with solar PV systems. This means the panel must handle both solar production and battery storage – often at the same time. That places demands on the panel design and the components used. See our solutions for local electrical infrastructure.

Our solutions for BESS integration

This is exactly where SystemTeknik comes in. We continuously work on getting existing installations to work together with new energy solutions – and we have built a complete setup around BESS solutions, from design and panel production to installation and integration into existing systems. Our services include:

BESS integration: We ensure that battery storage systems are integrated safely and efficiently into your existing electrical installation, so all components work optimally together.

Expansion and rebuilding of supply and distribution panels: When needs change, we adapt the panels. That may mean new outgoing feeders for a BESS, relocating existing feeders for solar PV systems, or a complete capacity expansion. As one of Denmark’s leading manufacturers of distribution panels, we have both the experience and the capacity to handle your specific electrical setup.

Adapting existing panels: Often there is no need for an entirely new panel – just a smart adaptation of the existing one. We assess space, load and requirements, and find the most cost-effective solution. Read more about component replacement for electrical panels.

Installation, cabling and completion: We follow the project all the way from panel production to installation and commissioning at the customer’s site. Our panel fitters ensure that the installation is carried out professionally and in accordance with applicable standards.

From design to commissioning – a complete process

Our approach to BESS integration builds on many years of experience with panel production and electrical installations. We follow the panels all the way, from the concept phase to implementation at the customer’s site.

The process starts with a dialogue between our sales team, project managers and the customer about needs and requirements. We analyze the existing installation, assess capacity and space, and design a solution that matches both the technical requirements and the budget.

In the production phase, we manufacture control panels and distribution panels to high quality standards. As an ISO 9001 and 14001 certified panel manufacturer, we make sure every panel is fully tested before delivery, ensuring optimal operational reliability and quality assurance.

Finally, our experienced fitters handle the installation itself at the customer’s site. They ensure correct mounting, cabling and integration with existing systems – exactly as Anders Vestergaard did on the project in Thy.

Safety comes first

When you invest in expensive BESS and solar installations, protecting that investment is essential. Our electrical panels are high quality, and the fire protection should be too.

We can supplement your panel solutions with automatic fire suppression systems that protect critical installations from fire and minimize costly downtime. With certified solutions such as the Reacton Fire Suppression System, you get a system that responds instantly to a fire in the electrical panel – with no human intervention at all.
